چکیده

The use of nonmetric multidimensional scaling as an ordination method has been studied by the use of simulated coenoclines and coenoplanes. It was found that the method always produced better ordinations than principal components analysis and in most cases better than reciprocal averaging, providing the multidimensional scaling was calculated using a space of the same dimensions as the simulated data. For real data of which the dimensionality is unknown, the minimum spanning tree can provide a useful means of estimating this dimensionality. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling was also less susceptible to distortion of the ordination by single gradients of high beta diversity and two-gradient situations when each gradient is of a different beta diversity. A number of different similarity measures were evaluated for use in conjunction with nonmetric scaling and the cos theta coefficient was found to generally give good results. The use of a log transformation of the species values had a marginal effect while the use of a 'Manhattan' distance metric in ordination space produced inferior results.

Applying Metric and Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling to Ecological Studies: Some New Results'

Metric (eigenanalysis) and nonmetric multidimensional scaling strategies for ecological ordination were compared. The results, based on simulated coenoplane data showing varying degrees of species turnover on two independent environmental axes, suggested some strong differences between metric and nonmetric scaling methods in their ability to recover underlying nonlinear data structures. Prior d...

Using Multidimensional Scaling for Assessment Economic Development of Regions

Addressing socio-economic development issues are strategic and most important for any country. Multidimensional statistical analysis methods, including comprehensive index assessment, have been successfully used to address this challenge, but they donchr('39')t cover all aspects of development, leaving some gap in the development of multidimensional metrics. The purpose of the study is to const...

Ordination Methods and the Evaluation of Ediacaran Communities

DOI 10.1007/978-94-007-0680-4_1, © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011 Abstract Analysis of paleocommunity data poses a challenge because of its multivariate nature, containing counts of many species in many samples. Comparison of the abundance of a single species among all samples provides only incomplete information, whereas attempting to consider every species is impractical. Ordinatio...

Nonmetric multidimensional scaling: Neural networks versus traditional techniques

In this paper we consider various methods for nonmetric multidimensional scaling. We focus on the nonmetric phase, for which we consider various alternatives: Kruskal’s nonmetric phase, Guttman’s nonmetric phase, monotone regression by monotone splines, and monotone regression by a monotone neural network. All methods are briefly described. We use sequential quadratic programming to estimate th...
